Hive App - BioMark
Our App
The app's main goal is to help people understand how their lifestyle choices can affect their health. It does this by using data from health tests and your medical history to assess your overall health and the risk of certain diseases. It was rebranded to Hive to show differentiation between our different platforms.

Competitor Research
In the initial phase of the revamp, I conducted competitor research by exploring healthcare apps like Doctor Anywhere, Grab, Homage, and Speedoc. I downloaded and navigated these apps to understand their user experiences, identifying their strengths and areas for improvement. This research guided our app's revamp, aiming to replicate successful elements from other apps while striving for uniqueness and an enhanced user experience.
Designing an Evolving App
In designing our patient app, we were forward-thinking rather than reactive. Initially, the app's redesign was focused on urgent COVID-19-related features to address the pandemic in Southeast Asia. Acknowledging the temporary nature of COVID-19, our strategic planning involved designing the app to address immediate challenges while ensuring flexibility for future pivots, a result of extensive collaboration between stakeholders and the design team.
Post-COVID World
Our business and design-driven approach involved considering the app's long-term lifecycle. Balancing user goals with business priorities was crucial, especially as the pandemic reshaped user needs and expectations. We designed the app revamp to transcend the COVID era, emphasizing functionalities essential in the evolving healthcare landscape. This strategy ensured continual app evolution, adapting to the changing stakeholder needs beyond the pandemic as we transitioned away from COVID-19-related content.
App Revamp
Upon joining, I aimed to modernize the healthcare app by leveraging design research and insights gained from my design boot camp experience and research online. Integrating these principles improved the app's alignment with its mission and refined its user flows based on competitor research. This transformation ensured the app's continual alignment with user needs. Below is an example of the app's evolution across iterations and changes made to the homepage's color and branding.

Evolving App
The app's main challenge involved redesigning its flow and designs due to a lack of initial research into its creation. Over time, the app went through several iterations to adapt to evolving requirements and external factors, shifting from COVID-19 testing to a lifestyle-oriented application.
Onboarding
The app's first iteration onboarding process was extensive, spanning 20 screens and requiring multiple data inputs, leading to high user drop-offs. My personal experience testing the flow revealed its inefficiency, as the process was overly complex and lacked a skip option, almost prompting me to abandon it due to its length.
Improving the Experience
I aimed to overhaul the onboarding process, focusing on reducing the number of clicks and simplifying the journey for users. By condensing the process to only 6 screens before reaching the homepage, our goal was to create a more user-friendly and efficient experience, allowing users to swiftly begin using the app after onboarding and to add in their health details.

Homepage
The homepage underwent multiple design iterations to meet evolving stakeholder expectations and aesthetics, as the previous design was outdated and needed a refresh. It was crucial as the homepage is the first impression users get upon entering the app.
Usability Testing
I conducted usability testing to align the homepage with user preferences, resulting in a comprehensive revamp that modernized the interface and enhanced the overall user experience.

Feature Tab System
A key aspect of this revamp was reorganizing the features of the previous version of the app by introducing a feature tab system on the homepage. This gives us a flexible structure that not only accommodates existing features but also positions us for future growth with new features.
Biomarker Results
To enhance user experience, we put lab report snapshots directly on the homepage, featuring critical biomarkers that require immediate attention. This allows users to effortlessly monitor their health status and prioritize necessary check-ups.
Wearable and Devices
As the app progressed, it transformed into a comprehensive lifestyle tool allowing users to monitor their health using over 200 connected devices. This integration enables users to receive guidance on their activities and areas for improvement.
Health Profile
We aimed to modernize and expand the original home screen by transforming it into a tab-based system, envisioning an enriched feature set for scalability. Through iterative design driven by user feedback, we explored diverse concepts to craft a unique, user-centric interface that enhanced usability and efficiency.
Screen Real Estate
This expansion provides greater design flexibility compared to the previous app version, which faced limitations due to space constraints. The older health profile icons were small and lacked comprehensive information, necessitating a redesign to enable scalability and accommodate more detailed data.

Challenges Faced
Balancing complex health risk information while ensuring user-friendliness was a key challenge. Achieving a visually appealing design alongside data presentation proved crucial in bridging the gap between information depth and user experience, resulting in a successful transformation.
Usability Testing
We tested different design formats with 4 users and found they preferred the Row format for health risks in the profile.

Who Is the App for?
Using stakeholder research insights, we created patient-specific user personas to grasp their changing needs from the pandemic to the post-COVID era. These personas guide us in understanding their preferences and facilitate the adaptation and transformation of app features to align with their evolving lifestyle.

Sketches & Ideas
I utilized competitor app insights to create concepts by sketching rough ideas and screens for our app based on the research done. These initial sketches formed the essential foundation for our app's design, visualizing the user journey and envisioned features.

Design Bootcamp Work
I expedited the app revamp by referencing my prior design bootcamp project, Pocketcare for valuable insights and ideas. This streamlined our efforts, saving time with a working prototype and leveraging past research for our idea generation.
Early Essential Ideas
The medical app and competitor research outlined crucial components and features for our app's blueprint. These foundational sketches laid the groundwork for our user-centric design. Despite evolving stakeholder needs, some initial ideas weren't implemented in the final product.

The Team
I was brought in for in the app revamp with another designer, in a large team of 6 engineers, 3 QA testers, and 1 product manager.
Outcomes
The development of the healthcare app was an enlightening experience that spanned from the initial design concepts to its current form, going through numerous adaptations to suit the evolving macro environment. A functional prototype from my boot camp project proved invaluable during our development phase as It provided a tangible reference point for our team, enabling us to fine-tune our ideas and gauge specific features based on available resources.

Doing this project highlighted the importance of collaboration with developers and project managers and the significance of resource and time management for me in learning the intricacies of developing an app. With insights from the design boot camp, I can efficiently streamline our design process and ensure that our ideas align with our development capabilities. This cross-disciplinary collaboration brought a level of synergy to the project that significantly contributed to its success which i learned is fundamental to a project's success.
